DIY Foam Soap

DIY Foam Soap

Peach bellini, dark cherry merlot, and warm vanilla sugar were some of my favorite hand soap scents growing up. A pump of foaming soap each time I washed my hands would leave my hands smelling amazing for hours! Recently, I have realized that these soaps are extremely toxic and have a lot of chemicals in them that I am no longer interested in putting on my body regardless of how great they smell.

Exogenous toxins are becoming a huge issue these days as they are some of the main contributors to many health conditions. Check out my post on The Toxic Twelve to learn more about the chemicals you should try and avoid putting on your body.

  • Fragrance (parfum) — what makes your soap smell lovely
    • Endocrine disruption, organ toxicity, allergies, asthma, cancer, neurotoxicity
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — what causes the soap to be foamy
    • Irritation to the eyes, lungs, and skin
  • Cocamidopropyl betaine — makes the foam foamier
    • Allergies, dermatitis
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone + Methylisothiazolinone — prevents the growth of bacteria in the soap
    • Irritation to skin and lungs, neurotoxicity
  • Benzyl alcohol — makes the soap smooth + gentle and a preservative
    • Irritation of the skin, neurotoxicity, not safe for infants

Brands to Avoid:

  • Bath + Body Works
  • Dial
  • Lysol
  • Softsoap
  • Method
  • Jergens
  • Palmolive

Brand to Enjoy:

  • Dr. Bronner
  • Carina Organics
  • Everyone soap
  • Saje
  • Attitude sensitive skin
  • Naturopathica
  • Hugo Naturals
  • Avalon Organics
  • Puracy

Environmental Working Group

A nice resource when checking to see if your soap is okay for use is the Environmental Working Group’s Deep Skin Cosmetic Database. This allows you to type in the brand name of the product and it will rank it on a scale of 1-10. The scale is:

  • EWG Verified
  • 1-2 (low hazard)
  • 3-6 (moderate hazard)
  • 7-10 (high hazard)

You want to avoid product in the moderate and high categories and limit your use of products in the low category. Try your very best to only use products that are EWG certified to ensure that everything you are putting on your body (also in your body) is clean as can be!

Try making your own foaming hand soap! It only requires 3 ingredients!!!! SO SIMPLE! This way you will know exactly what you are putting on your body and know it’s clean and healthy!

5 Tips for Glowing Skin

5 Tips for Glowing Skin

Dull, red, dry, scarred, and acne covered skin… this is not what anyone wants! Our skin is the first thing that people see when they look at us and I think its everyone’s dream to have perfectly glowing, dewy, and acne free skin (I know that is my dream🙌🏻)! For most of my life, I have suffered from pretty severe acne and tried everything from prescription topical creams, antibiotics, proactive skin care, and ended up resorting to Accutane to try and clear my skin. Acne made me very self-conscious and I don’t think I am the only person to say that.

Winter is the most WONDERFUL time of the year because of the snow… obviously!!! In Vancouver that may be a little different but in the rest of Canada there is snow and cold temperatures! The winter is amazing because you get to enjoy so many outdoor activities, some of my favs are snowboarding, snowshoeing + skating! Furry little friends tend to like snowy activities as much as I do. This winter was Zeus’ first time seeing snow and we weren’t sure what to expect but boy oh boy does he LOVE the snow so much! We took him to the ski hill and to all the local trails to go on winter hikes and snowshoes with us. It was important to us to make sure that his paws were protected while hanging out in the snow. In this post, I want to give you a few quick and easy ways to help protect your pup this winter season!
