Who’s ready for a little loco-cocoa this holiday season?! If you are anything like me you go a little loco for hot cocoa in the winter time. Hot cocoa is so yummy and so warm and its screams winter! After a long day on the ski hill or skating on the outdoor rink, all I want afterward is to sip a warm cup of cocoa. The only issue is… a lot of the store brand cocoa’s have a lot of sugar and additives. The good thing is that if you make your own all the ingredients are wholesome and can actually have some health benefits as well so you don’t have to feel guilty when drinking this delicious drink!
Cacoa powder — also known as Theobroma cacao is the natural source of chocolate that comes from the seed of the cacao tree. Raw cacao is considered to be a superfood as it contains lots of phytonutrients like sulfur and magnesium. However, what makes cacao really special is the flavonoid called epicatechin. Epicatechin is a powerful antioxidant that has several different effects in the body such an enhancing cognition and mood. Cacao is also in a raw form compared to cocoa powder which is refined and usually contains extra sugar. Who knew cacao could be so good for you!
Collagen — is the most abundant protein in the body that is present in muscles, bone, skin, blood vessels + digestive system. Collagen functions to give the tissue elasticity + strength. Collagen has beneficial effects on the skin, hair, nails, digestive system (as it helps individuals with leaky gut) + joints. Collagen is also a great source of amino acids especially proline, glycine, glutamine, arginine. When collagen is in the hydrolyzed form (like it is when supplemented) it is supposed to be 90% more absorbable than when getting it from food. Have you tried collagen!?
